will someone actually pay me for this?

There’s this interesting kneejerk reaction that happens when you’re thinking of ways to get people to give you money.

Of course, there are a few exceptional people who either feel no such fear, or feel it and proceed anyway.

But for the rest of us, that question of “yeah, but is this something people will actually pay me for?” can be a bit of a show stopper.

And remember – this is natural. This is normal. This is your brain doing the job it was assigned to do – protect you from catastrophe, which is why it spends so much time comparing new things to nuclear winter (just me? Oh…)

In other words, in a misguided attempt to keep you safe, your brain comes up with every possible excuse for moving forward with this new, scary thing.

It’s not you, it’s biology.

There’s a reason why “the devil you know” is a phrase… we can invent so many crazy, horrific consequences to doing something new and unfamiliar, that it naturally seems safer to stay put vs taking what we perceive to be a massive risk.

But back to the original question: will someone actually pay me to do this?

Here’s a short list of crazy shit people spend money on:

video games, D-Box seats at the movies (the ones that vibrate!), sneakers, elaborate manicures, accessories for their cars, accessories for their computers, art classes, dance classes, horseback riding classes, meditation, yoga, punch-people-in-the-face self defense classes, tennis, being a leader, Harry Potter, whatever the hell Funko Pops are supposed to be, $400 shoes with a red sole (I can paint that shit red myself, TYVFM), fashion consultations, beef in a box shipped to your door, speed reading, building better habits, personal shoppers, theme part tickets, golf outings, camping…

I could go on and on for days.

The short version is this: if people have money, they’re going to spend it. Will they pay you? So long as you’re not coming up with something totally off the wall that no one’s ever heard of (it’s a whole different battle trying to invent something new AND get people to love it), odds are someone somewhere would be willing to pay you for it.

Now you have one less excuse standing between you and building that dream business.
