I don’t know if anyone else thinks of starting a business as “revolutionary”.
But I happen to think it is.
Maybe mine is the hundred millionth freelance writing business to ever be started in the world, but it’s my small act of rebellion against the norm.
It’s me daring to take back my freedom in the face of forty years as a corporate stiff.
And the funny part is that most people will tell you that a freelance writing business is all fun, all the time.
How many poolside margaritas and beachy umbrella photos do you see when it comes to writing businesses?
How many “laptop lifestyle” entrepreneurs do you see bragging about how they can work from anywhere, anytime.
More like everywhere, all the time.
I didn’t start my business just to become a slave to my own dreams.
You won’t find my laptop anywhere near the beach.
- Eww. Seagulls = rats with wings
- Double eww… sand in crevices and no-no parts.
- When I’m at the beach, I actually want to enjoy myself… NOT be staring at a screen.
Call me a rebel… but I didn’t risk everything and take a leap of faith to work around the clock in my own business.
And not only that, to have to wear all the hats to boot. Administrative assistant, project manager, head of marketing, AND person who actually does the writing.
Who signs up for that voluntarily?
It’s a lot of work.
It takes a special kind of rebel to stand up and refuse to take orders, to willingly accept responsibility for making decisions and creating a new destiny… win or lose.
It’s much easier to take orders and absolve ourselves of responsibility when we’re not getting the life we always dreamed of.
Frankly, if everyone COULD start a business, everyone WOULD.
Most aren’t willing to fight that fight.
But I am…
Are you?
Love it. Thanks for reminding me to stop sitting on my ass and get movin’!
For me, the biggest driver for wanting to get out of a cubicle was to find work that inspired me and compelled me to wake up every day. Work is a lifestyle for me, not just a “thing I do to get money” (but money’s great and I like money too.)
Damn, Angie. This is brilliant and inspiring.
“It’s me daring to take back my freedom in the face of forty years as a corporate stiff” literally made me sit up a little taller.
It’s such a fight worth fighting.
Thank you! I needed this today! It’s not easy to start out and I find myself looking at my screen when I should be looking at ANYTHING else. It so refreshing to be rememinded I’m not the only one fighting.
